Register for Qmunity’s Queer Competency Training
Join BCCPA, EngAge BC and Qmunity for a four-hour workshop, intended to help you build the queer competency you need to support LGBTQ2+ seniors.
Through facilitated conversations you will focus on creating inclusive spaces and building out allyship. You will learn about:
- LGBTQ2S+ terminology and definitions.
- The gender binary and spectrum models.
- Gendered language, including pronouns and how to respectfully ask people which pronouns they prefer.
You can expect to come away with a better understanding of your LGBTQ2S clients, particularly who they are and what their experiences.
Come prepared to participate in self-reflection, for example:
- Self-reflection exercise completed to illustrate how, even as allies, we oppress and/or act as bystanders during moments of oppression, before discussing ways in which we can disrupt our own biases and prejudices of those around us.
- We will examine ways in which complicit or explicit homophobia and transphobia manifest, while discussing the similarities and differences between discrimination, prejudice and oppression, as it applies to the LGBTQ2S community.
