B.C. government proclaims February 19th as BC Seniors Care Providers Day
Fifth annual provincial proclamation recognizes over 50,000 care providers
In recognition of the thousands of workers who take care of B.C. seniors every day, the Province of British Columbia has declared February 19th, 2020 as BC Seniors Care Providers Day.
“When we’re in seniors care, it’s usually because, in some fashion, our bodies have failed us. And our care aides, nurses and the people who run care homes provide the liberty to continue to live when some liberty has been taken from us by time, health and fate,” said Minister of Health Adrian Dix at a luncheon this afternoon. “I would like to thank all those who work in seniors care, particularly care aides, LPNs and RNs, for doing what they do every day.”
BC Care Providers Association and EngAge BC are proud to recognize the compassion, professionalism and dedication of over 50,000 care providers in B.C.
“Care providers are the unsung heroes who deserve to be valued and celebrated for the excellent, compassionate care they provide seniors every day,” said CEO Daniel Fontaine. “The B.C. government’s proclamation—for the fifth year in a row—serves as a reminder that the work they do makes a profound difference in the lives of seniors and family members.”
BC Care Awards celebrate excellence in seniors care
Every year, the BC Care Awards celebrate excellence in the delivery of seniors’ care in long-term care, assisted living and home health, promote workplace safety, and acknowledge longstanding leadership in the sector. In years past, the awards were presented at a ceremony in Victoria attended by Members of the Legislative Assembly, key Ministry of Health staff, and BCCPA service provider and commercial members.
This year, BCCPA is making the BC Care Awards more accessible for care workers and expanding the number of awards in the Care Provider of the Year category.
The 7th Annual BC Care Awards will take place at SafeCare BC’s Hearts and Hands conference for health care assistants.
Care Provider of the Year (Long-Term Care/Assisted Living/Home Health) recipients from the Interior and Northern B.C. will receive their awards on October 5th in Kelowna; Vancouver Island recipients on October 27th in Victoria; and Lower Mainland recipients on October 29th in Langley.
“We are very excited to partner with BC Care Providers Association, who will host the BC Care Awards at the three Hearts and Hands conferences,” says SafeCare BC CEO Jennifer Lyle. “Two of the goals of Hearts and Hands is to celebrate and inspire. By presenting the awards at the conferences, front-line workers will be celebrated for their work in front of their peers, which we believe will inspire others.”
The Safety Champion and the Ed Helfrich Long-Service Award recipients will be honoured at BCCPA’s 43rd Annual Conference in Whistler, B.C.
Nominations for the BC Care Awards open on March 1st, 2020. Visit bccare.ca/bccare-awards for more information.
