Andrew Sixsmith PhD, Professor | Director of the Science and Technology for Aging Research (STAR) Institute
Dr. Sixsmith is the joint Scientific Director of AGE-WELL NCE, the Director of the SFU STAR (Science and Technology for Aging Research) Institute, and a professor in the Department of Gerontology at SFU. He is past President of the International Society of Gerontechnology and was previously Director of the Gerontology Research Centre and Deputy Director of the IRMACS Centre at SFU. His research interests include aging, social isolation, technologies to connect people, technology for independent living, technology policy and the digital divide, theories and methods in aging, and understanding the innovation process. His work has involved him in a leadership and advisory role in numerous major international research projects and initiatives with academic, government and industry partners. He received his doctorate from the University of London and was previously a lecturer at the University of Liverpool in the Institute of Human Ageing and Department of Primary Care.
Carol Bucknor BScN, RN, MHA(c), Executive Director | Resident Services & Inter-Professional Practice | Louis Brier Home & Hospital
Ms. Bucknor has dedicated almost 30 years to health care, she has worked in a variety of settings such as acute care, academia, community care, and remote northern communities prior to coming to Louis Brier Home and Hospital. She has lead many initiatives over the years, most recently the building of a one of a kind in Canada Air Ambulance program that includes on the ground support to clinicians. She hopes to utilize the skills, training and experience that she has developed over to the years at Louis Brier as Louis Brier works to becoming an organization of excellence.
Dr. Yazden Mirzanejad MD, DTM&H, FRCPC, FACP, Clinical Associate Professor, Senior Consultant | Infectious Disease, Surrey Hospital Campus & Health Sciences Centre
Dr. Mirzanejad is a clinical associate professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of British Columbia as well as a senior infectious diseases consultant at the Surrey Campus. He has been the site lead for UBC department of undergrad for ambulatory medicine in Surrey since 2014, a new curriculum required for undergrad students in clinical training. He has been appointed as associate for faculty development in Vancouver Fraser Medical Program since 2017. Dr. Mirzanejad is an MD graduate from Iran University of Medical Sciences in 1985 and completed his internship in 1989 at St. Paul’s Hospital at the University of British Columbia. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Manitoba in 1994, as well as a fellowship in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1997. He also received board certification in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the Gorgas Institute in Peru in 2008 and American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. He is co-site director for British Columbia in Geo-Sentinel surveillance study to screen travellers with febrile illnesses spearheaded by Centres for Disease Control in Atlanta, United States. He served as the chairman of the Society of Tropical Medicine Expert Group of British Columbia since 2013. Dr. Mirzanejad has been the recipient of honor roll award in excellence for clinical teaching of under and postgrad trainees by UBC in 2016 and 2018.
